Salicylic acid, a plant-based Beta Hydroxy Acid (BHA), is well known in the cosmeceutical industry for its outstanding performance as a chemical exfoliant when incorporated in topical formulations. It is derived from the bark of willow trees; hence it is termed a natural ingredient in skincare products. Chemical exfoliants, like salicylic acid, are better than physical scrubs as physical scrubs can damage the skin’s outermost layer, i.e., the stratum corneum. Furthermore, the scrub beads can enter deep into your skin layers causing internal damage.
BLACKHEAD & WHITEHEAD FORMATION
Our skin has pores containing hair follicles and sebaceous glands (sebum-producing microscopic organs), which help seal moisture inside the skin and prevent foreign substances from entering the skin. When dead skin cells start layering on top of these pores, they get clogged which causes sebum to get trapped inside the pore. This leads to the formation of whiteheads. When the mouth of these pores widens, oxidation and debris settlement lead to blackhead formation.
BREAKOUTS
Even when the pores are clogged, the sebaceous gland keeps producing sebum that is trapped inside the pores. These pores, when infected with bacteria, lead to breakouts.
MECHANISM OF ACTION
Skin cells are present in layers, the stratum corneum (outermost layer) has dead skin cells while the cells below the stratum corneum are still young and maturing. Furthermore, desmosomes are ‘binding bodies’ in animal tissue that anchor two adjacent cells together, keeping skin cells organized. During metabolism, enzymes break down desmosomes of dead skin cells, leading to the separation of dead skin cells and subsequent shedding of the stratum corneum. This process of dead skin cells shedding and the younger cells replacing them is called skin cell turnover.
However, with ageing the rate of metabolism decreases because of which the enzymes causing the breakage of desmosomes are produced at a very slow rate. In that case, the dead skin cells stay intact causing the build-up of dead skin layers, hence slower skin cell turnover.
This is where salicylic acid comes into the picture, wherein it dissolves the desmosomes, and eventually skin cell turnover takes place. Also, salicylic acid is lipophilic, i.e., it is insoluble in water, hence it can penetrate through the lipid barrier of the epidermis. Moreover, it can enter the pores and penetrate the sebum causing deep exfoliation, this property of salicylic acid makes it a brilliant exfoliator.

FAQs
1) Are chemical peeling solutions safe for your skin?
Yes, absolutely! Just don’t over-exfoliate. Follow the recommendations for the best results. If you have extremely sensitive skin, start with the starter concentrations at 10%.
2) What is over-exfoliation?
Excessively exfoliating your skin using physical scrubs or chemical peels can shed your new skin cells too, leaving your skin dry, stripped, purged, and irritated. Always go by the recommended frequency.
3) Can I use this in the morning?
No! An AHA BHA PHA blend must always be used at night so that your new layer of skin is not exposed to the sun right after exfoliation.
4) What is the pH of this serum?
pH 3.2 - 3.6
5) Who should avoid using this serum?
Exfoliation is necessary for everyone; however if you have faced severe skin purging or other symptoms in the past, you must consult your dermatologist. Also not recommended for pregnant or breastfeeding women.
6) Does the serum cause purging?
Yes, the serum solution is known to increase skin cell turnover, so expect a little purging in the initial days since it brings out dead skin cells quicker than at its natural pace.
7) Should I use this serum if I have acne?
Absolutely! The serum helps in increasing skin cell turnover and sheds dead skin cells. Therefore, it will help you in reducing and prevent active acne.
8) How do I pick the right concentration?
Refer to our “The Right Concentration For You?” section to pick the right AHA, BHA, PHA blend concentration now
9) Can I use other exfoliators throughout the week along with this?
Understand what your skin needs, and then build a regime accordingly. You may use other exfoliators, but do not over-exfoliate. Check your skin’s sensitivity and add products in your regime accordingly.
10) Can I use an exfoliator if I am pregnant?
No, it is recommended not to use any of the exfoliators if you are pregnant or breastfeeding.
Why picking the right concentration matters?
Every professional was once a beginner, just like your skin. It is crucial to understand your skin’s tolerance and choose an ingredient concentration that won’t damage the barrier (or your faith in skincare)
It takes 6-10 weeks for the skin to adjust to a certain concentration of this AHA, BHA, PHA blend & show results. Serumique Suggests moving to a higher concentration only after 6-10 weeks! Our robust research allowed us to understand that the best results come through between 10%-30% of this blend.
