Ingredients
Key Ingredients:
1% Alpha Arbutin - Naturally occurring brightener that targets the enzyme- tyrosinase that initiates the process of melatonin synthesis. Alpha Arbutin reduces the secretion of melanin by binding with the tyrosinase, thus brightening dark spots!
0.9% Lactic Acid – An Alpha Hydroxy Acid (AHA) known to lovingly exfoliate your skin. It removes dead skin cells from the surface without a fuss!
Rice Ferment Extract – An extract of a byproduct of Rice Fermentation by healthy microbes. It bears a close resemblance to the skin’s natural moisturising factor (NMF), moderates the skin’s natural functions by balancing the pH level and restores moisture. Anti-wrinkle & collagen boosting essential!
Alpha arbutin is a naturally occurring hydroquinone, also known as Hydroquinone 𝛃-D-glucopyranoside. It is found in blueberry leaves, pear trees, cranberry leaves, and bearberry plants. Widely known to be one of the best ingredients for skin brightening, acne scars, and antioxidant activity, it is better than hydroquinone as it is less toxic to cells and has fewer side effects. It reduces hyperpigmentation by slowing down the rate of tyrosinase activity in cells.
HYPERPIGMENTATION
Amino acid tyrosine is oxidized by the enzyme tyrosinase to form melanin. Melanosomes are intracellular organelles, present in melanocytes (melanin-producing cells), that are responsible for producing and storing melanin. These melanosomes are transferred from melanocytes to keratinocytes because of which pigmentation occurs. However, during excessive UV exposure, hormonal changes, and aging, tyrosinase activity increases, because of which the amount of melanin produced is more and melanosome transfer from melanocytes to keratinocytes also increases, which causes hyperpigmentation.
SKIN DULLNESS
The main cause of skin dullness is a lack of proper exfoliation and dryness. When the enzyme that promotes desmosomes breakage is produced at a very slow rate, the cells stay on top of the skin until they are washed off using exfoliators. This causes our skin to look dull and flaky.
MECHANISM OF ACTION
Melanogenesis is the process of the production of melanin in melanosomes. When changes in different biochemical processes with respect to melanogenesis take place, various melanogenesis-related complications can occur like increased melanocytes, leading to increased melanin synthesis. Alpha-arbutin reduces hyperpigmentation by taking the active site of tyrosinase. Alpha-arbutin is structurally similar to the substrate that binds to the active site of the tyrosinase enzyme, so it competes with the substrate and binds with the residues located at the active site. This leads to reversible inhibition of tyrosinase in which the rate of tyrosinase activity is reduced to normal, so the amount of melanin deposition is less, hence reducing hyperpigmentation.

FAQs
1) How long does it take to show results?
About 8-10 weeks.
2) Does it have any side effects?
Alpha Arbutin suits every skin type and is not known for any particular side effects. Although, we recommend a patch test before using the product and also starting with the lower concentration and a proper regime, especially if you’re a beginner.
3) Can I use a Vitamin C serum with this product?
Yes, absolutely! The combination will help in bringing out even toned and glowing skin.
4) What is the pH of this serum
5.2 - 5.7
5) What is post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation?
A brown/black dark spot caused as a reaction to inflammation is known as post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation. The pigmentation is often a result of excess melanin in that area of your skin.
6) Is hydroquinone better than alpha-arbutin?
Actually, it is quite the opposite. Hydroquinone might be carcinogenic and works by killing the cells that produce pigmentation and melanin, but alpha arbutin inhibits the secretion of tyrosinase which stimulates melanin synthesis.
7) Is beta arbutin better than alpha arbutin?
Absolutely not. Alpha arbutin is 10 times more effective than beta arbutin. Beta arbutin has lesser benefits and is usually used as a cheap substitute for alpha arbutin.
8) Can alpha-arbutin be used by pregnant women?
Alpha Arbutin can be safely used by pregnant women! However, we recommend that you consult your doctor once
9) Is this serum water-based?
Yes, it is a water-based serum.
10) Can an acne-prone person use this serum?
Yes, it works very well for people with acne-prone skin as well. In fact, this is an excellent product to reduce acne scars and marks.
11) Can I use this serum in the AM?
Yes, this serum can be used both in the AM and the PM. However, we recommend layering it up with sunscreen while using it in the AM.
12) Will this product permanently lighten my scars?
Sadly, no. This inhibits melanin secretion and doesn't kill it. Hence, you must keep on using it to lighten hyperpigmentation.
Why picking the right concentration matters?
Every professional was once a beginner, just like your skin. It is crucial to understand your skin’s tolerance and choose an ingredient concentration that won’t damage the barrier (or your faith in skincare)
It takes 6-10 weeks for the skin to adjust to a certain concentration of Alpha Arbutin & show results. Serumique Suggests moving to a higher concentration only after 6-10 weeks! Our robust research allowed us to understand that the best results come through between 1%-2% of Alpha Arbutin.
